It’s that spooky time of the year again, and along with the fun and festive atmosphere comes a common challenge – how to maintain healthy eating habits during the holiday season. Today, we’re going to tackle the ultimate Halloween question: to candy or not to candy?
My Halloween Weight Gain Experience
I, too, have faced the Halloween candy conundrum. There were years when I found myself breaking into the candy stash, only to regret it later. My solution? I started buying Halloween candy that didn’t appeal to me.
And, in recent years, I’ve stopped buying candy altogether. Living in a cul-de-sac means we rarely get trick-or-treaters, so it’s an easy way for me to avoid the temptation.
But what’s your plan to stay healthy this Halloween? Are you wondering how to navigate the seas of candy and treats this Halloween without adding unwanted pounds? You’re not alone. Many of our VitaliTi students have faced the same challenge, and they’ve come up with some creative solutions to avoid Halloween weight gain.
Halloween Tips from VitaliTi Mastery Students
In our recent VitaliTi Mastery coaching session, two of our students, Jill and Renee, shared their tried-and-true strategies to help keep the Halloween weight gain at bay.
Jill’s Tips:
Jill, a dedicated mother, has an interesting approach when it comes to her children and Halloween candy. “I allow my kids a free-for-all the first few days,” she revealed. This technique gives her children the autonomy to learn their own body’s cues and limits.
But she also teaches them they don’t have to eat what they don’t like. Jill advises, “I also encourage them to simply throw away the candy they do not like.” This is not only an excellent tip for children but adults as well. By removing unwanted temptations from your space, you’re setting yourself up for success.
Renee’s Tips:
Renee takes a different approach. She puts emphasis on the other fun parts of Halloween that aren’t candy-related. “Dressing up is a great way to celebrate the holiday and get in the spooky spirit without putting the pressure on candy and sweets,” she shares. Renee’s sentiment is a refreshing reminder that Halloween is not just about the treats. It’s about dressing up, watching scary movies, walking the neighborhood with kids, carving pumpkins, and enjoying other fun activities.

A. Choose your candy wisely: If you’re planning on handing out candy to trick-or-treaters, avoid buying your favorites. The less appealing the candy is to you, the less likely you are to indulge.
B. Consider non-candy alternatives: Halloween stickers, for instance, are a fun alternative to candy.
C. Manage your candy inventory: Whether it’s leftovers or your children’s haul, it’s essential to discard extra Halloween candy and snacks. Remember, out of sight, out of mind. So if you do decide to keep some, make sure it’s out of your visual field.
D. Be prepared: If you’re attending Halloween events, why not bring dishes you love and that align with your healthy eating plan? It’s a surefire way to ensure there’s something nutritious and yummy for you to enjoy.
E. Focus on festivities: Halloween is so much more than candy. Embrace other aspects like dressing up, spending quality time with loved ones, or crafting spooky decorations.

And if ever you find a candy too irresistible, don’t beat yourself up. Instead, understand that many candies are designed to be hyper-addictive, laden with chemicals, artificial colors, and flavors. So, feel liberated to discard any that might lead you into temptation.
