No, you can’t actually catch a cold from being cold.
But the cold weather and holiday season sure do seem to bring along the cold and flu season! Why is that and what can you do about it?
Immune systems are compromised by end-of-year indulging. Let’s look at how sugar affects the immune system.
White blood cells need 50 times the concentration of Vitamin C than the cells around them to kill off bacteria and viruses. But, because glucose and sugar have similar structures, if you’re eating sugar, your white blood cells will accidentally pull in glucose instead of Vitamin C—making them ineffective at fighting off colds!
Sugar raises our blood sugar and lowers our immune system. At a blood sugar level of 120 (easily accomplished by eating dessert), our white blood cell’s ability to kill viruses and bacteria is reduced by 75%. Because the holiday season seems to be a time of sanctioned cookie eating and wine drinking, we often don’t even realize the damage we are doing to our physical health when consuming all the sugar.
Have you considered the correlation between the period following the holidays and the peak of flu season? The trend is consistent. Susceptibility to infection is heightened in January and February. Here’s a quick illustration:
The damage is done—here’s what you can do right now to repair.
Decrease your sugar (hands down, our best strategy for this is our 30 Day RESET* cleanse program).
Increase your Vitamin C. Designs for Health has several awesome Vitamin C products which you can start taking immediately, such as C+ BioFizz, PaleoReds—or go for the heavy hitter, Immune Support Packets.
Start up your exercise routine again. Physically fit and active adults reduce their risk of having a cold by almost 50% according to a study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine! That’s a huge difference.
Get outdoors and get more Vitamin D. One of vitamin D’s most important roles is keeping your immune system strong so you’re able to fight off the viruses and bacteria that cause illness. Studies show that 75% of US teens and adults are deficient in this critical nutrient so we recommend getting your Vitamin D levels tested and taking Vitamin D Synergy from Designs for Health. This is our choice because in addition to Vitamin D, it also has along with other fat-soluble vitamins, A, E (tocopherols and tocotrienols), and K (K1 and K2) for absorption. Pro Tip: Did you know that research is emerging on the intricate interrelationships between these nutrients which means don’t go dosing up on one without having the others in balance!
Increase your liquids and hydration. Dehydration and dry air both are triggers for colds and flu. Keep your liquids up including lots of homemade broths and soups and be aware that dry air is also drying up your mucous membranes which can lead to inflammation.
Sleep, Sex, and Stress. It’s easy to forget that too little sleep and too much stress both wreck your immune system. And did you know that sex is good for your immune system? When you first start to feel run down, see if you can go to bed early for more reasons than just getting more rest! And change up some of those items on your to do list—give yourself more time on any projects, take your time getting back to people and then make your priority taking really good care of yourself.
The gut is the source of all disease and health.
Around 80% of your immune system is in your gut. If you are getting sick twice a year or more, chances are, your gut flora is imbalanced. Our newly launched cleanse program, the 30 Day GUT RESTORE gives you the tools to restore and optimize your gut health, using foods, supplements, and testing.**
Immune Support Packets include all the best herbs, nutrients (including Vitamin C) and even detox support to boost your immune system and ward off colds.
Stellar C, if you prefer a pill form.
